UPMA/RULAU

Upma/Rulau is a traditional South-Indian breakfast recipe prepared using sooji/semolina. It is very nutritious, tasty , soft and easy to prepare. Again you can make N variations on this recipe. Today I am going to write very simple recipe prepared using very few basic ingredients. Try this out and I am sure you are simply going to love it!!Upma is called  "Rulau" in Konkani.

Preparation time : 20 minutes
Serves : 2

Ingredients
Coconut Oil/vegetable Oil - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - 5 to 6
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Channa dal - 1 tsp
Broken cashews - 1 tsp
Dry red chili - 1
Green chili chopped - 3
Small Onion chopped - 1
Hing/Asafoetida - big pinch
Sugar - 1/2 tsp
Frozen Green peas - 1/4 cup
Sooji/Semolina - 2/3 cup
Salt to taste
Water - twice amount of sooji

Preparation
  • Heat oil in pan. add mustard seeds when they start to splutter add urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves , cashews and saute till it turns golden brown.
  • Add dry red chilis, onions, green chilis, hing and saute for minute.
  • Add water (two 2/3 cups) , salt to taste, sugar, frozen peas and bring it to nice boil.
  • When water comes to boil, switch the flame to low and add sooji/semolina and keep stirring as you add them. semolina absorbs the water and gets cooked. Cover it with lid and allow it to steam for 2 minutes in low flame.
  • Upma/Rulau is now ready. serve hot with cup of coffee or tea and enjoy
