ALOO MATAR/POTATO GREEN PEAS GRAVY

Aloo Matar is delicious Punjabi dish prepared using potatoes and green peas in spiced tomato based sauce. This dish can be served with rice/ any Bread . Try this delicious recipe and do share your comments and variations.
Green Peas Potato gravy
Preparation time : 30 minutes
Serves : 3

Ingredients
Potato cut into cubes - 3
Frozen green peas - 1/2 cup
Black peppercorns - 2
Cardamom - 2
Cloves - 2
Cinnamon - 1/2 inch
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 1tbsp
Hing/Asafoetida - Big pinch
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Red chili powder - 1/4 tsp
Garam Masala powder - 1/2 tsp
Kitchen king masala - 1/2 tsp
Coriander leaves - 3 stramds
Salt to taste
Vegetable oil - 2 tbsp
Dried kasoori methi - 1/2 tsp

For the spiced tomato based sauce
Onion - 1
Garlic cloves - 5
Green chilis - 3 to 5
Ginger - 1 inch
Almonds - 3
Broken cashews - 1 tsp
Red chili - 2
Tomato - 2

Preparation
  • Grind all the ingredients mentioned in 'For the spiced tomato based sauce' adding very little water to form smooth thick paste.
  • Heat oil in pan. add cumin seeds, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black peppercorns and saute for second.
  • Add ground paste , coriander powder and cook in medium flame covering the lid till it comes to nice boil and raw smell goes off.
  • Now add potatoes and cook them. Once the potatoes are 90% cooked add green peas, turmeric powder, chili powder, hing and  very little water for desired consistency. Bring it to nice boil.
  • Add garam amsala, kitchen king masala, coriander leaves, kasoori methi and mix well and cook for another one minute.
  • Aloo Matar is now ready. serve hot with rice/ any Bread and enjoy.
Tip:
To speed up the process, you can always microwave potatoes till its half cooked and then add to the gravy.
