DAL RASAM

Dal Rasam is delicious, healthy Indian recipe that can be served as side dish with rice/ breads/ or even as soup. This is definitely comfort food to me. Try this recipe and do share your comments.


Preparation time : 20 minutes
Serves : 3 to 4

Ingredients
Toor Dal - 1 cup
Water - 3 to 4 cups
Peppercorns - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Ginger - 1 1/2 inch
Garlic cloves - 5
Green chilis - 3
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Hing/Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp
Butter - 2 tbsp
Coriander leaves - 5 strands
Tomato  chopped - 1
Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

Preparation
  • Wash the toor dal in water atleast 2 times and keep it aside.
  • Crush the peppercorns and cumin seeds to fine powder ( You can also use readily available pepper and cumin powder)
  • In a pressure cooker add butter.crush the  garlic cloves and saute them till they turn light in color. now add green chili, ginger, turmeric powder, hing , crushed cumin and black pepper powder and saute for few seconds.
  • Add toor dal, water, coriander leaves, salt to taste. mix well. cover the pressure cooker with lid and weight/whistle and cook for 3 whistles.
  • Switch off the flame and then add tomato and lemon juice and mix well.
  • Dal rasam is now ready. garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot and enjoy.
Tip:
Amount of water to add while cooking depends on the consistency you like for rasam.
