RULAVA IDLI

Rulava Idli/idli using sooji is popular konkani breakfast recipe which is prepared using sooji/semolina.This is prepared during fasting day like ekadashi or on festivals like Ganesh chaturti, Janmastami...Very simple to prepare and my favorite among Idli recipe. You can allow the urad dal to ferment or prepare the batter immediately and make idlis without any fermentation. Since I already had fermented urad dal paste ready I am writing recipe prepared using fermentation.
Rulava idli
Preparation time : 20 minutes
Fermentation : overnight
Serves : 20 medium idlis

Ingredients
Sooji/semolina - 1 cup
Urad dal - 1/2 cup
Salt to taste
Coconut oil to grease the idli molds

Preparation
  • Wash and soak urad dal in water for 30 minutes.
  • Grind them to form a smooth paste.Allow this to ferment overnight.
  • Mix this well with sooji and salt. add water if required. This batter should have medium thick consistency.
  • Add enough water in pressure cooker and switch on the flame.. I use pressure cooker without whistle.
  • Grease the idli moulds with oil.Pour idli batter to each mould.
  • Steam it for 8 to 10 minutes in medium flame.Once its done using spoon remove idli from the plates.
  • Rulava Idli is now ready. Serve hot with Hing chutney and enjoy.
