BLACK EYED PEAS AND POTATO SOUP - INDIAN STYLE

Black Eyed Peas and Potato Soup is healthy, delicious soup recipe prepared using black eyed peas, potatoes, garlic. This is also called sarupkari in konkani. I just love the flavor of garlic and spiciness from dry red chillis. You can always vary the amount of spiciness as per your taste. I love spicy food always. This can be served alone or even with rice/bread.

Preparation time : 20 minutes
Serves : 3 to 4

Ingredients
Black eyed Peas - 1 cup
Garlic cloves - 8
Dry red chillis - 5 to 7 (vary the amount as per your taste)
Vegetable Oil - 1 tbsp
Water - 4 cup
Hing/Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp - big pinch
Salt to taste
Potatoes cut into cubes - 2

Preparation
  • Soak 1 cup black eyed peas  overnight.
  • Heat oil in pressure cooker. just crush the garlic cloves and add them and saute till it turns light brown. then add dry red chillis and hing and saute for few seconds.
  • Drain the soaked black eyed peas and add them with the potatoes.Add 4 cups of water and salt to taste and mix well.
  • Cover the pressure cooker with whistle/weight and cook it for 3 whistles(one in high flame and two in medium flame)
  • Black eyed Peas and Potato Soup is now ready. Serve hot and enjoy.

Tip:
  • If you are using soaked beans ,the soup will have medium thick consistency once done.
  • If you are using canned beans then mash one potatoes to get medium thick soup consistency and prepare the soup in pan instead of pressure cooker.
