BLACK URAD DAL DOSA/PANCAKE AND APPO

Black Urad Dal Dosa and Appo is delicious breakfast recipe prepared using rice and black Urad dal. This dosa/appo is favorite since my childhood days. Love the texture and taste of the dosa. Its totally different from other dosas/appo. This dosa is generally served thick in temple and is called pejje polo in konkani.  I have prepared thick dosa, thin dosa and appe using the same batter and served with the Jalapeno chutney

Preparation time : 20 minutes
Soak time : overnight
Serves : 3

Ingredients
Black urad dal - 1 cup
Raw Rice - 1 cup
Coconut oil - for cooking dosa
Mustard seeds - 1 tbsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Channa Dal - 1 tsp (optional)
Curry leaves chopped - 1 tbsp
Salt to taste

Preparation
  • Wash and Soak rice and urad dal together for at least 5 hour. I soak it overnight.
  • Next morning, grind urad dal and rice adding very little water to form medium thick, coarse batter. add the salt and mix well. batter is now ready.
  • For the thick dosa :  Heat tbsp of oil in tava. add the mustard seeds. when they start to splutter add urad dal, channa dal and curry leaves. when they turn golden brown , pour laddle full of batter to form thick dosa. let the flame be medium. add oil to the edges and cover it with lid. Once its crisp and cooked on one side flip on other side and cook in medium flame till its crisp and cooked .
  • For the thin dosa : heat oil in pan. add the mustard seeds . when they start to splutter add curry leaves and spread small thin dosa. cover it with lid. once its cooked on one side, flip on other side till its golden brown and cooked.
  • For the appe : Heat appe pan and add little oil to all the holes. Add 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of mustard seeds to each holes. when they start spluttering add curry leaves and  pour the batter on each holes. cover it with lid.When it is cooked from one side turn and cook on the other side.
  • Black urad dal dosa is ready. Serve it hot with your favorite chutney and enjoy.
Tip:
  • Cook the thick dosa in medium flame so that its crisp outside and cooked well inside. If you do it in high flame, dosa will turn black soon and remain uncooked from inside.
